Artist's History
Presently I have an art studio at 375 depot Street in Asheville, NC and am a member of the River Arts District Artists. I grew up in the art and performing world of New York City. While a young teenager, my mother brought my sister and I to a yoga Ashram where I was introduced to meditation, my breath and yoga. I first went to Cornell University and then Bennington College and graduated with a degree in Art, Architecture and Dance. After college I moved back to New York City, where i worked as a graphic designer, while dancing, choreographing and starting a dance company that performed around the New York area. We created performance art pieces about gender issues, diversity, city living, over consumption and the fragility of life. I moved to Massachusetts and was introduced to Body-Mind Centering, studied Authentic Movement, and became a Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist. The three disciplines opened me up to my inner world, and the body and movement allowed access to my unconscious. The art began to emerge from dreams, and became a source of inner inquiry, a vehicle for exploring my inner psyche and body. The process of creating art, after moving or entering active imagination, became a source for the artwork. I went to Smith College in dance and then moved to California, where I went to California Institute for Integral Studies and then California State University at Hayward. I graduated and became a Licensed Professional Counselor and Dance/Movement Therapist. I also did advanced training with Janet Adler, PHD, BC-DMT in Authentic Movement. During the training while others were moving, I would witness the movement sessions through drawing. Having access to the deeper currents of the internal process through Authentic Movement allowed the images to flow. The mover's fluid body, allowed the water and color to flow across the paper. I moved to North Carolina with my husband, and gave birth to my two amazing sons. I teach workshops in Authentic Movement, Body-Mind Centering and Creative Pathways to Inquiry; taking people into their inner body to explore through art, movement, drama, touch, and writing their inner worlds. I also work as a counselor in private practice, including Meditation and Mindfulness practices, Dance / Movement, Art, Drama and Bodywork Therapy. I worked as a psychotherapist and art teacher in Community Mental Health, where I enjoyed watching children as they explore the materials of art making. I have taught Body-Mind Centering at the Kinesthetic Learning Center in North Carolina, SOMA in Paris France, Moveus, in Germany and Leben Nuova in Italy. I have taught at Duke University, University of North Carolina, Smith College, University of California at Hayward, Esalen institute, Omega Institute, and several colleges and Universities throughout the United States and Europe. I have exhibited my artwork in several venues including art galleries and cafes. |
